Scent Layering: Emphasizing fragrances, increasing longevity
Share
In the fragrance community you can not turn a page on social media without seeing a layering routine. Seriously - they are everywhere no matter where you scroll. And if your FYP or Explore looks anything like mine you are seeing layering posts MANY times a day. But what is scent layering? How does scent layering work? Let's talk about it!
Scent layering can function in two different ways. The first function to create your own fragrance (sort of) by combining different "layers" with different products. In this case, they don't have to be similar or near identical fragrances, or even come from the same fragrance family (gourmand, floral, woodsy, etc). For example, wearing a blue raspberry burst fragrance mist followed by our Spun Sugar Extrait de Parfum (this is one of my personal favorite combos). This combination creates an incredible fragrance of a realistic blend of both blue and pink fresh cotton candy.
The other purpose of scent layering is to emphasize a fragrance and increase longevity by layering a series of products of similar fragrances. It all starts in the shower with body washes and/or scrubs. After that, you're onto body oils and/or body lotions, body butters, or body creams. Last, but certainly not least, your final layers are fragrance mist and/or perfume.
Am I making this sound more complicated than it is? Here is an example (and one for alll the Vanilla Obsessed who have my heart). And yes, this is my favorite one to do at home:
Start in shower with Tree Hut's Frosted Sugar Cookie Scrub paired with Dove x Crumbl Nilla Bean Cupcake body wash. After your shower, but while skin is still damp (to lock moisture in) use Hempz Frost Mountain Lotion (Sugar Cookies with frosting scent), then start your final fragrance layer with Bath and Body Works Merry Cookie fragrance mist and our Iced Sugar Cookies or Vanilla Milkshake EDP.
Now I am aware that not everyone has this incredible Vanilla overload collection of limited edition products. Or maybe you don't own a single Tree Hut or Hempz Product. Either way, even without these exact products you get the idea, right? Combining a series of body care products with very similar fragrances will amplify your final layer and increase longevity. If you are a body oil girl, add one before or after your lotion. Prefer to use body butters over lotion? Great! The main idea is to use several body care products to product more intensely fragranced skin. Substitute based on your collection, and your preferences, but I promise you Combining like fragrances products will lay a stronger foundation for your final layer. Hydrated skin retains/projects fragrance more effectively and if you're here, that's likely your goal!
